The "C" Word

Sentinel provides service to patients with a wide variety of medical diagnoses. However, the most complex and challenging situations are when a patient learns they have a diagnosis of the dreaded “C” word - Cancer. I would venture to say that most of us have personally known someone affected by this disease. With progression of disease we witness the physical, emotional and financial toll it has not only on the patient but family members as well.

As a case manager for Sentinel, I frequently get calls asking if a procedure or service requires precertification. Internal programs allow me to quickly pull up the patient and the group’s precertification requirements. For most cases a good rule of thumb is that the following DO NOT require precert.

Proper Body Mechanics

Lift with your knees, not your back! are words of wisdom that have followed me throughout life. Growing up as the daughter of an auctioneer, I spent many summer days packing and lifting heavy boxes. My father always stressed the importance of asking for help if something weighed too much and I was told over and over - "Take care of your back."

Sentinel has been providing utilization review and case management services to various employer groups since 1988. My name is Jess and I am Sentinel’s case management supervisor. I was extremely excited when asked to develop a monthly news bulletin. Initially, I would like to provide a little background of who I am and my role at Sentinel.

Bob

Bob is a managed care coordinator who in 1984 started as a compliance analyst for credit and mortgage insurance. Later he shifted to major medical. This staff member has spent countless hours reviewing claims, medical policy and has a lot to say about both.

Jess

Jess is a nurse case manager dedicated to patient advocacy after receiving her RN license in 1998. This long time staff member provides her unique perspective based on thousands of conversations held with patients and providers.
